Enhance Your Brand Reputation With These Powerful Packaging Solutions
Did you know that 21% of oversized online purchases arrive damaged? This not only hurts the company’s reputation, but it can be costly. Every year, American companies spend an estimated $50 billion on product returns. Not to mention, these returned goods are often put into landfills and contribute to the release of 27 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Luckily, there’s a way to avoid product damage, lost revenue, and negative customer interactions. Custom-made gaylord boxes are the answer.
Gaylord boxes are large, heavy-duty, corrugated boxes that are used for shipping and storing large products. They’re usually rectangular, but can also be octagonal. Usually, they will have a pallet as the base as they’re used for shipping and storing heavy items. Think about a box of watermelons you see at your local supermarket. Those are gaylord boxes.
These boxes come in a wide range of options and can help you save money in the long run. Let’s dive into the specifics of these boxes and help you decide if they’re right for your business.
Types of Gaylord Boxes
Gaylord boxes can be broken down into three categories: single-wall, double-wall, and triple-wall. As you can see in the photo below, these different wall categories differ in their size and strength.
Single-wall boxes have one layer of fluting (the wave-like section) sandwiched between two layers of linerboard. This is best for packaging lightweight products and will be the most cost-effective option for your brand.
Double-wall boxes are made using two layers of fluting with a layer of linerboard on each side of the flutes. This results in a five-ply box that’s stronger than the single-wall variety. You’d likely choose double-wall boxes for heavier or higher-value items that need greater strength. The double fluting adds a better cushioning effect and absorbs damaging shock that might happen en route to the product’s final destination.
Triple-wall boxes are even more durable, with a seven-ply material. They have three layers of fluting, which allows for the highest strength possible. These are going to be the most expensive option, and are usually reserved for large shipments and delicate items. Most applications will not need more than a double-wall option.
Common Uses and Applications
As mentioned above, you might see a gaylord box used to hold watermelons at your local grocery store. But they can also be used for much more than that. Here’s what you’ll commonly see them used for:
- Raw materials, components, and finished products for the manufacturing and distribution sector
- Fruits, vegetables, grains, and other harvested produce
- Collection points for recyclable materials like paper, plastic, and metal
- Retail goods
- Other bulk storage and shipping needs
Advantages of Gaylord Boxes
These boxes can provide a range of advantages for your business. Investing in these boxes over other types of materials can provide the following benefits:
Economical Advantages
Gaylord boxes can help businesses save money. They’re reusable as they’re strong and durable. Additionally, they can help save money on shipping costs as they can allow you to send more within one shipment.
Eco-Friendly
Gaylord boxes are made of corrugated material, meaning they’re mostly recycled content. The average corrugated box is made with 52% recycled materials. That percentage can increase if you work with a manufacturer that has sustainability in mind.
Customizability
These boxes are highly customizable, meaning they can be tailored to your specific needs in terms of size, shape, and design. You can also modify them with flaps, access doors, and more to enhance functionality.
